John Connolly

1949 to 1981

John and I were very close friends, having met in Gr. 9 or 10 at Hillcrest.  He was my Best Man in 1974.  He had 2 sisters: Cathy and Maureen.
John worked a lot on the Yearbook as a photographer.  Most photo shoots seemed to occur during French or Latin classes!       ( Subjects J.C. was not keen about!)
He had a great mechanical ability; was often working on his Honda motocycles.  My first bike ride was on the back of his Honda 90; I soon bought my own!
John was killed on his 750 bike in the early 80's.
He is sadly missed.

Brad Cook

October 11th, 1954 to November 18th, 2008

Brad's kids were most important to him, daughter Julie Love, sons Kevin, Kyle & Wesley Cook, grandsons Dylan & Aaron Gordon.    Julie and her sons live in Perth ON. The boys live in Kelowna.

He married Ginny Brown in 1984 and they bought a farm in Low Quebec where his 3 sons were born before moving to Kelowna in 1993.

Brad was a jack of all trades and worked at far too many jobs to list, but they usually involved a vehicle of some sort, although after finally returning to college in his mid 40's - his last career was as an electronic technician for Okanagan Computer Products.

Todd Cook

September 5th, 1956 to January 28th, 2011

Todd passed away this morning in Kelowna BC where he has lived for the past decade.  He was born in Ottawa, attended Hillcrest High School from approx. 1970-1973 before finishing his education in Calgary AB, (where his son Brenden was born in 1983), and he later moved to Vancouver.  Todd also has 3 grandchildren in Calgary.

He and our brother Brad both passed at age 54 - this photo was taken 3 years ago with Brad's sons after his stroke in 2005.  Todd spent most of his working life as a welder and renovation contractor.   He had a stroke in 2003, was not able to fully recover, and lost his lifetime battle of ill health while awaiting a liver transplant.

Mary Frost (Baxter)

March 23rd, 1950 to December 25th, 2010

Frost, Mary
FROST, Mary Mary left this world peacefully on December 25, 2010 to be with her Lord and Saviour. Mary Baxter was born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 23, 1950. She moved to Ottawa, Canada, with her family in 1959. Following school, Mary joined the federal public service in 1967. Here she met and later married her husband Eldon Frost in 1969. Mary left work in 1972 upon the birth of her first child Andrew, and the births of Kristina and Katherine followed in 1974 and 1975. Mary went back to fulltime work with the Carleton Board of Education in 1993, taking early retirement in 2001. Mary adored her family. As a result of her warmth and the genuineness of love she showed for others, her family became greatly extended to include people from all areas of her life. She had a rare capacity to make others feel good about themselves, and people were attracted to her as a result. Mary was predeceased by her father Andrew in 1976, and in addition to her husband and children is survived by her mother Helen Baxter, sisters Ann Diguer and Helen Cote, brothers and sisters-in-law Evelyn Bruneski, Glenn and Leona Willoughby, Fred and Betty Frost, Calvin and Carol Frost, Randy and Joyce Braun, and by many nieces and nephews. Thanks is extended to staff of the Ottawa Hospital, Cancer Centre, Community Care Access, and the May Court Hospice. Many people were involved in the excellent care she received, and she was most appreciative of that care. Thanks to Rev. Jack Archibald of St. Paul's Church, and to the extended church family for their many acts of kindness. In place of flowers, donations may be made to May Court Hospice, or St. Paul's Church.

Hugh Graham

December 3rd, 1947 to February 8th, 2010

After graduating from Hillcrest, Hugh studied Commerce at St. Pats College in Ottawa. He began his studies in Hospital Administration at the University of Ottawa and did an internship at Victoria Hospital In London, Ontario.

Hugh lived the last 25 years of his life in Kingston Ontario with his wife of 40 years Pat (Mulvihill) and their children, David and Shannon. It was in Kingston that Hugh became the Executive Director of the Hotel Dieu Hospital. He strove to provide quality, caring service to all who entered its doors. In 1998 the Ontario Hospital Commission was attempting to close most of the Catholic hospitals in Ontario. Hugh, his Board of Directors and the Sisters of Hotel Dieu fought the commission right up to the Supreme Court level and won. Hugh was credited with leading this action and its ultimate success in keeping Hotel Dieu open to this day. He retired in November of 2008 after more than 24 years at Hotel Dieu.

Hugh believed in working hard and then taking time to play and he encouraged others to do likewise. He loved a good game of golf almost as much as he loved being up at the cottage with his family. He and Pats midnight dance parties were legendary. He was adored and respected by friends and family alike.

His was a life full of integrity, loyalty and determination. A life cut far too short.

Hugh was a kind, loving, generous and brave man -  but depression shows no respect for these qualities. It is as random and, all too often, as fatal as cancer. Hugh died on February 8th, 2010.

My sister Joan passed away in the summer of 2001 at the age of 52.  Joan graduated in 1969 and went on to teach with the Lanark Board (mostly in the Perth area) for 29 years. Many of my old friends will remember her…..and remember that she taught me how to drink beer at the Chaud.

These words will never do justice to the memories that we built when we were young. Although Joan died from Pick's disease we can say that we had a hell of a ride. And after all, if you can't say that, what the heck are you doing here.

Patti, I can't even begin to tell you how much I miss you.  When someone who knows us so well is suddenly gone, it's hard to know how to define ourselves sometimes.  You were so much a part of who I was, both at school and afterwards.  Always funny, always there when someone needed help or just an encouraging word and a coffee.  Too many fun times with you to count (and too many tequilas!).  I'll watch over (your son) Ryan and (your mom) Betty.  Rest in peace, my sweet, sweet friend.  Nova Scotia's prodigal daughter is finally home.

Always interesting, Mike travelled to many places around the world but he always found home in Elmvale. He contributed positively to many kids during his scoutmaster years.

Shannon Reynolds

October 18th, 1967 to April 9th, 2009

Shannon attended Hillcrest High School from 1981-82 to 1985-86.

Shannon graduated in 1986, she was an Honors student and during her time at Hillcrest was quite active with the Drama Club and the Athletics program. She participated in numerous Hillcrest plays and musicals, played Goalie on the boys’ hockey team and was a member of Hillcrest’s first girls’ touch football team where Hillcrest won the championship over Woodroffe during the first season girls’ football was introduced by the Ottawa Board.

Shannon went on to Ottawa U where she finished her BA in Lettre Francais and Theatre. She then concentrated in the theatre community by acting, directing, producing and stage managing many plays mostly supported by the Great Canadian Theatre Company here in Ottawa. She moved to Toronto to pursue her career in Theatre in 1998 where she continued working in the different aspects of the arts for many years until her disease no longer allowed her to pursue her love for the stage.

In 2008 her disease became aggressive and progressed into leukemia. She went through chemotherapy and radiation treatments before obtaining a bone marrow transplant from her donor brother Rob, also a Hillcrest Alumni.  Although the transplant provided hope, her organs did not recover from all the intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments she had received. Shannon passed away on April 9th, 2009.

In a letter Shannon wrote while being hospitalized she states, “We extended my life a very long time, basically double, but eventually it just caught up with us…such is the nature of the disease. I have no regrets and have been fortunate enough to always be able to follow my dreams”.

Shannon’s legacy lives on through an endowment fund set up in her name at the Great Canadian Theater Company, aimed at supporting young up and coming actors and actresses. Donations can be made at the following address http://www.gctc.ca/support/ways-to-give

We miss you.

Jennifer Robertson (Dresch)

September 13th, 1973 to November 23rd, 2007

Jen (Dresch) Robertson
Jen was a much beloved science teacher at Hillcrest from 1999 to 2007.  She was a skillful physics teacher, well-liked and widely respected. Jen had high expectations of her students, and always managed to bring out the best in them.   She was well known for her sense of humour; her impressions of students and teachers were legendary.  Jen was known for her generous spirit.  She cared deeply for her students, and always made time for them, whether she was supervising an event, helping with academics or sharing a moment to talk or joke.   Above all Jen was a friend and inspiration to many. Her loss is deeply felt by students and staff.

Colleen Lynne Scott

May 20th, 1950 to May 15th, 1998

I first came to  know "Scotti" at Vincent Massey Public School in 1958.  Since that time we remained friends, albeit at times at a distance.

Colleen's years at Hillcrest were her most memorable.  Acedemically brilliant, gregarious, athletic and witty she was truly a great person, always sharing a moment with her life-long friends friends, laughing and enjoying every moment life had to offer.  Her many school activities captured thoughout Impacts 1965 to 1969 witness her presence on stage, in the Prefects, or in a sporting event.

Following graduation from Hillcrest, in 1969, Colleen worked at RCMPolice Headquarters in Ottawa.  She would never discuss her work; however clearly enjoyed it. and deeply cared for those on her team.  I later came to learn of her valued and dedicated service to "The Force".  I recall when she purchased her brand new RX7 rocket which she proudly showed me when I was visiting HQ one day.  Very Nice to say the least!  Each  time I had a need to visit the NPSIC Buildiing, I would call ahead in the hope of meeting up with Scotti for coffee/lunch.  Our brief encounters provided an opportunity to play "who-is-where-doing- what".  I quickly learned of a mutual friend (Anne) in New Zealand and  Penny nursing in Toronto and so on.  Colleen kept contact with so many of her friends no matter where their life's travels took them.

It was on one such occasion in the years that followed that I encountered difficulty in reaching Scotti for a prolonged period of time.  Finally a mutual friend from HQ contacted me to tell me that our friend Colleen had been hospitalized for quite some time.  I was able to speak with her mother and eventually Scotti; however visitation was not permitted.  Within a few days Colleen had slipped from our presence.  She now rests beside her parents in The Garden of Remembrance at Beechwood Cemetary in Ottawa.

From the time I first came to know Scotti those many years ago, I quickly came to admire her as a lady who upheld a deep respect for family and friends.  She was a beautiful person in so many ways and even today her love lives on within those who had the priviledge to come to know her.

Shawn Spencer Armstrong Ullrich

July 20th, 1969 to February 15th, 1989

Shawn, who attended Hillcrest 1983-1988, was an energetic, fun-lovin’, athlete/sports enthuiastist with a keen passion for hockey.  He played at the competitive level for the Canterbury league,  then Jr.B and eventually joined the Hawkesbury Hawks (C.J.H.L.).  His tragic death prompted the family and Hillcrest School to initiate “The Shawn Ullrich Memorial Hockey Award” – M.V.P. for the Hillcrest Hawks, presented annually since June 1989.  The South Ottawa Junior B’s also paid tribute to Shawn by retiring his # 24.
Our beloved redhead exuded a kind, friendly, entertaining personality which contributed significantly to his participation in numerous high school activities..... particularly social ones – just ask the “Boys of ‘88” (and  the “Girls”, too)!
Following graduation, Shawn moved to Calgary to pursue a degree in Commerce.  When his Dad, Peter, unexpectedly passed away in January 1989, Shawn courageously delivered a eulogy, deeply touching all 1200 people in attendance.  Consequently, Shawn made the decision to leave Calgary and return to Ottawa to continue his studies.  While en route, Shawn (along with Jeff LaFlamme) died in a highway accident on February 15th,1989.
Shawn, remembered by so many and spoken of so often, is just a thought away!
We, the Ullrich family,  take this opportunity on Shawn’s behalf, to thank Hillcrest for its ongoing friendship and to offer congratulations on  FIFTY  years of educational excellence!
And now, the last word goes to Shawn: “ Treasure what is today, for tomorrow it becomes just a memory.”     - SSAU Yearbook ‘88

Peter Wellstead

November 6th, 1947 to December 30th, 1966

Peter had tought me everything about wrestling. He was older than I but he was always ready to instruct us about the ins and outs of wrestling and winning. I believe that Pet died of Leukemia. I will never forget the last day I saw him standing at the door looking somewhat pale. I knew then that their was something very wrong.
